Ship of Fools” is a short film about humanness and the underlying feelings of obsessions and anxiety; about the gap that each has to fill with some meaning or construct to overcome one's existential fear. It's about observation and encourages the viewer to contemplate on his own perception. It's about loneliness, emptiness, frustration, hate, darkness, longing for attention and confirmation. Further it talks about solidarity and is crossed with the fascination for the surreal.

There is no strict narrative storyline going through the film. It contains of 6 scenes that are put aside each other and are connected through a feeling of emptiness, a somewhat “desperate” mood of the characters, the length of the lapse of time they depict, and they will cross each other ways without interacting. The characters are portrayed in everyday life situations, though the moments in which the story takes place reveal a meaning of the scene that goes beyond everyday life.

In the centre of the story is a young man, Lennard, that is stuck working in a bar, not having a perspective on his own life at the moment.
Then there is Krystoph an old frequenter, that used to be a film maker a long time ago and now frustrated from life frequents the bar.
Then there is Rachel, a young girl, locked off in her own world with an extremely singular perception and therefore perceives the world surrounding her as threatening.
An other character is Joy, who is constantly seeking for attention, whereat she is often not aware of her behaviour.
And last Margriet an elderly, sympathetic, self-assured woman who enjoys talking to strangers on the street and is very strict in educating her grandchild.
